Franklin College Joins World’s Largest Library Catalog By 2007
01/26/2007
WorldCat is the largest, most accessible library catalog on earth.
WorldCat includes the records of libraries in over eighty countries. It is created and maintained by over 9,000 member institutions (www.oclc.org/worldcat/). Soon, Franklin College will be one of those member institutions. All we have to do is load our library records into WorldCat.Sound like a lot of work? It will be, however, the benefits are many. “When FC catalog records are loaded into WorldCat, the FC catalog can be accessed through Google by anyone on earth with internet access,” says Library Services director Susan Gilfert. Ultimately, this will increase hits to the FC website and raise the institution’s profile. Gilfert is enthusiastic about the project and has already begun loading Franklin College’s records. In fact, 34,000 have been loaded to OCLC, the parent organization of World Cat. Further, Gilfert has set a timeline for the project’s completion. Continuation of record-loading is scheduled to take place through fall with access in 2007.
