Prof. Steinert-Borella's new book focuses on famous female travel writer

Bestsellers in the 1930’S and 40’s, the travel narratives of Ella Maillart once received widespread attention. In fact, both French- and English-speaking readers eagerly consumed Maillart’s accounts of her extensive travels in Asia. Until recently, however, these fascinating accounts seemed to have been forgotten.

Today, Sara Steinert-Borella rediscovers Maillart for the contemporary reader. In her new book, The Travel Narratives of Ella Maillart:(En)Gendering the Quest, Franklin’s Associate Professor of Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies conveys the richness of Maillart’s work and presents a tempting landscape of questions pertaining to gender, genre, and nationality for the reader to explore.
