Citation and Writing Resources

About Citing Sources

By citing the sources you use in your research, you give credit to others whose work you use. Franklin College has print style guides for MLA, APA, AP, and Chicago styles in the reference sections of both libraries. Online guides provide examples and tips (especially for commonly used types of sources), but do not replace the print guides, which are regarded as the final authorities on how to cite properly.

Some research databases and free online tools will generate citations for you. These can save you time, but it is important to know that these often make mistakes. Before you use an automatic citation generator, familiarize yourself with the citation style you will be using. Double-check any automatically generated citations for errors.

RefWorks Citation Management Software

RefWorks *NEW*, is designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies. Franklin College has a site license for this service. If you are new to RefWorks you can Sign up for an Individual Account. Once you have registered be sure to use the online tutorials available at their website to learn more about how to use the system. If you have used it before simply go to the log-in page and log-in. Further information can be found at the RefWorks home page.

Free Citation Tools

These websites are freely-available alternatives to RefWorks (Franklin purchases RefWorks for campus use). Generally, free options have fewer features, but may be easier to use depending on your needs. Some require you to download software.

EasyBib - a free bibliographic tool for creating lists of citations in MLA style.
Zotero - free alternative to RefWorks.
Connotea - another free online reference manager.
