Creative Writing and Literature

Great writers, from all national literatures, are inspired by what they read. That symbiosis between reading and creative writing is the foundation of this major. T.S. Eliot wrote a well-known article about this link of past to present. Kundera’s Art of the Novel praises the 18th century novel, a great source of his inspiration. Students in this major will read great literature from Homer and Dante to the 20th century giants, Joyce and Proust, as well as contemporary writers like Edwidge Danticat, Orhan Pamuk and Derek Walcott.

It is the intention of this major to help facilitate the creative self-expression of students who like to write. This is done through encounters with great literatures and, of course, through writing and re-writing. Creative writing courses are offered in poetry and prose. These courses help prepare students for a final senior project. This can be a thesis of a critical nature or an advanced creative writing project in either poetry or prose, the orientation of which is determined by the student in conjunction with his or her Project Director.
