Fulfilling the Vision for Franklin

Franklin College has experienced a 70% increase in enrollment over the past 10 years. This is good news as the College strives to keep the intercultural balance among students while providing an environment for a strong education. Our Fall 2008 enrollment reached an all-time high of 433 students. Although the increase is good for the school, it presents challenges for student housing. Research studies show that students who live within the campus environment have higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate than students living outside the campus environment. These facts, coupled with the difficulties of securing a rental apartment in Switzerland, contribute to the need for building a new residence hall on the Franklin College campus. In anticipation of this growth, several years ago the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of land adjacent to the existing campus; groundbreaking for the new residence complex took place there in July, 2007.

The Property

The property, on a hillside directly across the street from the Kaletsch Campus, will provide living space with scenic lake views, a large green space for student activities, much-needed parking, space for a language center and additional office space. Built in three phases, the project, which will cost $23,000,000, will be a state-of-the-art living facility, providing an additional 127 beds for Franklin students, who will be able to choose from single living accommodations or suites accommodating from two to six students.

Completion

Phase I of the complex was completed in January, 2009. The remaining two phases will be completed over the next three to five years.

Support

Philanthropic support from trustees has made the start of this much-needed project possible. However, to complete the project Franklin needs the support of alumni and friends in helping to make a difference in the lives of Franklin College today and for many years to come.
