Academic Travel Awards
When alums are asked to recall their best memories of their Franklin College experiences, Academic Travel always makes the A-list. There are many remarkable tales about trips to Morocco or to Brazil or a hang up at Checkpoint Charlie in East Germany. Academic Travel is part of the core of a Franklin education and continues to thrive today as it did when the school was founded more than 30 years ago. Our students confirm that experiential learning about different cultures makes a difference in their attempts to understand and appreciate cultures outside their own.
The program has grown to cover an ever wider range of topics including the history, music, politics, economics, civic changes, literature and other cultural aspects of the countries visited. With an expanded travel map, the costs of providing these key components of a Franklin College education have increased along with the rising costs of fuel and airline travel. To accommodate trips to more distant locations, the College requires a supplemental charge above tuition. Such trips are beyond the economic resources of those students struggling with financial issues, who instead participate in less expensive Academic Travel opportunities.
An Academic Travel Award provides funds for trips requiring supplements for which eligible students can apply. The awards are based on criteria established by the donor which could include academic performance, financial need, area of study, mastery of the language, etc., as outlined in discussions between the donor and the Development Office.
On the other hand, an Academic Travel Award could be used to provide additional funds for the professor to use for the benefit of all the students on a particular trip, administrative support to help the professor plan the trip or additional outings that would otherwise not be possible on that trip.
Academic Travel Awards: $3,000
