The Travel Narratives of Ella Maillart
(En)Gendering the Quest

Bestsellers in the 1930’S and 40’s, the travel narratives of Ella Maillart once received widespread attention. In fact, both French- and English-speaking readers eagerly consumed Maillart’s accounts of her extensive travels in Asia. Until recently, however, these fascinating accounts seemed to have been forgotten.

Today, Sara Steinert Borella rediscovers Maillart for the contemporary reader. In her new book, The Travel Narratives of Ella Maillart:(En)Gendering the Quest, Franklin’s Associate Professor of Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies conveys the richness of Maillart’s work and presents a tempting landscape of questions pertaining to gender, genre, and nationality for the reader to explore.

The Travel Narratives of Ella Maillart:(En)Gendering the Quest was published by Peter Lang Publishing in January, 2006.
