IT Services

We encourage you to bring your own laptop computer, however the College provides the following computing resources to all students:

  • The Computer Laboratory houses a fast Ethernet network of high-end Pentium IV-class computers and a laser printer.

  • The Library and Study Room contain Pentium IV-class PCs where students can scan documents and write data to CDs or DVDs.

  • Electronic Classrooms on the North and Kaletsch campuses house a network of Pentium IV 3.2GHz-class workstations and two printers each (including one color laser).

  • Macintosh Labs are located in the Academic Building on the North Campus. They also include scanners, color lasers and large format color plotters.

  • Public access computers are also available at the Kaletsch campus and the Falcon’s Nest student lounge.

For network access, each student is given a domain account, a college “student.fc.edu” email address, and storage space on the network for personal files and personal web pages.

Compatibility

The free campus-wide wireless network is available at all times to students possessing wireless-networking devices. In addition to having full access to the wireless network on both campuses, students have access in all residences. To gain access to the wireless network, laptops must be compatible with the 802.11.11b or 802.11g protocols. Although many newer laptops already have built-in interface modules, students should expect to pay from $60 to $140 for additional PC, PCMCIA, or USB network interface devices. Before purchasing a networking device (card), consult your laptop user-manual or vendor to ensure that you need one. Please note that less expensive devices often have configuration, compatibility and durability problems, and therefore, it is recommended that students choose a wireless device in a mid-price range.

If you own a desktop computer and would like to bring it with you to Franklin, you will need a wireless USB adapter or PC card (different from a PCMCIA card) to connect to the Internet.

Protecting your computer

It is important to be aware of the higher 230 volts AC used in Switzerland. While most desktops may have the capability to switch to using higher voltage, it is unlikely to be automatic. You must check the voltage capacity of your device. Consult your user-manual or vendor to see if you can change your voltage or if you need a step-up transformer.
